There’s nothing quite as great as filling your home with warm inviting smells - especially when you want a cozy night in. Whether it’s just for us or to welcome company, a delicious scent sets the tone for a comfortable evening. Unfortunately, many fragrances and air-fresheners are full of synthetic fragrances and chemicals that can be irritating to the chemically sensitive or induce allergic reactions. If you’re looking for an easy, safe and natural way to fill your home with fragrance, then stovetop simmers are for you!
A stovetop simmer is a simple and safe way to infuse your home with long-lasting aromatic scents. They’re natural, easy-to-make, and low-cost. You simply boil water over the stove and add a combination of fruits, herbs, and/or essential oils. Once you’re happy with the intensity of the scent, you can drop the water down to a simmer and leave it simmering as long as you wish.
Here are a few stovetop simmers to get you started. Feel free to experiment with other smells that you love.
Good Morning Blend: Your guests won’t know if they’re visiting a friend or a professional roasting house. This blend is also wonderful for a rainy morning when you just want to stay home in your pajamas and read a book. You’ll need roasted coffee beans, one vanilla bean or a few drops of vanilla essence, and a stick of cinnamon.
Citrus Fresh: This infusion has a light fresh scent and will leave your kitchen and home smelling like it’s just been cleaned. It’s also a great scent to put on anytime you’re feeling sluggish and need a pick-me-up. You’ll need orange peels, one orange cut in half and juiced, lemon zest, and a bay leaf.
Apple Pie A’La Mode: You don’t have to love dessert to appreciate cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. Think of it as a warm hug on a cold winter’s night. You’ll need one sliced apple, one cinnamon stick, a pinch of nutmeg and a few slices of ginger.
If you’re looking for a way to warm up a dinner party, spice up a date night, or perk up in the morning, stovetop simmers are a natural, non-toxic and (let’s be honest) fun way to fragrance your home.
