You and so many others would really like a magical formula for rapid overnight growth of your curls. But unfortunately it's not that simple.
Let's cover the basics first.
Shedding: It’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs every day regardless of how your hair is styled. When you shed significantly more, you're experiencing excessive hair shedding.
Hair loss: Occurs when something stops hair from growing. Growth doesn't resume until the cause ends.
Hair breakage: Cuticles fall apart and eventually separate, leading to damage and breakage.
Hair growth: Hair grows 1/2 inch per month in healthy individuals.
Length retention: Growth is often confused with length retention, but they are different things. Growth is simply new growth. Length retention is new growth plus existing length.
Key: If you feel your hair isn't growing, you're probably not gaining length. This means you're probably experiencing breakage, hair loss or excessive shedding that is occurring at about the same rate as your growth.
Key: If you're alive your hair is growing unless you're experiencing treatments or illnesses known to cause hair loss (ie, chemo, radiation, certain medications, etc).
If you feel your hair isn't gaining length, meaning you're experiencing breakage, excessive shedding, hair loss or lack of growth, evaluate your overall hair care regimen, health and diet to identify the cause or causes. Causes can be:
✅ harsh haircare techniques
✅ harsh haircare ingredients and products
✅ harsh hair manipulations
✅ too tight styles
✅ excess direct heat
✅ nutritional or haircare deficiencies
Resolution will require changes in how you take care of your hair and may require dermatologist consultation, tests and treatment.
