We talk a lot about how to keep your hair healthy, but what about your scalp?

Scalp health is so incredibly important. Without a healthy scalp, you can not have healthy hair. A dry, irritated or inflamed scalp can hinder hair growth, cause excessive breakage or shedding or cause other issues like dandruff.

To keep your scalp healthy and protected, check for dandruff, itchiness, flakiness or irritation. If you have any of these symptoms, it’s time to give your scalp some extra attention.

Here are some ways to boost your scalp health.

Remove build up regularly

Residue from sweat, dirt and hair products (especially silicone) can build up on your scalp and hair and cause a variety of issues. To keep your scalp and hair build up free, be sure to incorporate a pH appropriate shampoo into your wash day regimen, especially so if you primarily co-wash or have low porosity hair. Depending on your normal regimen, a clarifying shampoo may be needed. It's important to note, vinegar has a fairly low pH of 3-4 and can not serve as an effective clarifier. Effective clarifiers have higher pH's in the range of 5-7.

Maintain the right pH balance

Your entire body is pH balanced. For your scalp, a pH balance that skews acidic can cause the hair follicle to flatten, making it easier to take in and retain moisture. An alkali scalp will cause the follicle to open, making it more susceptible to being dry and brittle. To keep your scalp more acidic, check the pH balance of your shampoo and avoid anything too alkali.

Boost your omega-3 intake

Omega-3 is plentiful in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines, and in spinach, eggs, walnuts, chia seeds, broccoli, hemp and flax seeds. You can also supplement with oils and vitamins.

Use Organic Pumpkin Seed Oil Serum

Organic Pumpkin Seed Oil Serum is packed with nutrients and vitamins that your scalp needs, like fatty acids, Vitamins A & E, magnesium and zinc. It’s fantastic for restoring nutrients back to your scalp. For best results, apply to your scalp weekly. Want to mix it up? Try mixing 2 egg whites with 2 tablespoons of pumpkin seed oil, and apply to your hair for an hour for a deeply nourishing scalp treatment.

Once you restore your scalp to good health, make it a priority to keep it that way. Your soft, supple curls will thank you!
