1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in Florida and have lived in Florida for most of my life. For 2 years, I lived in the Washington, D.C. area. I graduated from the University of South Florida in May 1989 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing. I also hold a Project Management Professional Credential from the Project Management Institute. I launched CurlyCoilyTresses®️ after 26 years in corporate America.
2. How long have you been natural and what would you say influenced your decision to go natural?
I began transitioning from relaxed to natural hair in July 2013. I completed the ‘big chop’ in March 2014 and have been completely natural since. After having relaxer spilled onto my face and undergoing chemical burn therapy for treatment, I knew I needed something better. Natural hair was definitely better.
3. What inspired you to create CurlyCoilyTresses®️?
Allergy and patch testing identified allergies to fragrance and so many other things. Since 96%-98% of hair care is fragranced, I had great difficulty finding fragrance free moisturizing natural hair care. Even some brands marked as fragrance free contain fragrance masking agents, chemicals or other fragrances used to alter or neutralize an unappealing odor).
Even after shopping in Canada and the United Kingdom, I still wasn't completely satisfied with my options.
I started buying raw ingredients and crafting natural hair care in my own kitchen. I did this for about a year before launching CurlyCoilyTresses®. Currently my products include: Enrich Moisturizer Leave In Conditioner, O Magazine Award Winning Nourish Treatment Deep Conditioner and Organic Pumpkin Seed Oil Serum.

6. What advice would you give to someone considering a natural hair journey of their own?
Be patient, creative and willing to step outside your comfort zone. Natural hair is quite different from chemically-enhanced hair. Focus on health, not length. Don't compare your hair to anyone else's. Not every product or technique will work for you. Not every style will work for you. Cherish your hair's uniqueness. Understand your hair porosity, width and density.
Porosity is a measure of how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture. Width is a measure of the thickness of your individual hair strands. Density is a measure of the number of hair strands within a 1 square inch section of your scalp.
All hair textures require moisture and hydration. Moisture is derived from water-based products that can be absorbed and retained by your hair. Hydration is derived from products that simultaneously reduce moisture loss and increase moisture content (i.e., from products containing hydrolyzed proteins, silk amino acids, hydrolyzed oats, clays, humectants, etc.). You will need to identify your optimum moisture and hydration levels.

I continuously work on ways to increase awareness of CurlyCoilyTresses. Usually through newsletters, collaboration with other brands and with events in my private Facebook group.
